Kingdom Hospital
David Connell analyzes his camerawork on this ambitious and chilling ABC miniseries, which has been loosely adapted from Danish director Lars Von Trier's 1994 TV project The Kingdom.

Boomtown
John Newby, ASC discusses his approach to the NBC show, which frequently involved shooting in 360 degrees with two cameras.


AC will also review the career of Michael Chapman, ASC, this year's recipient of the ASC Lifetime Achievement Award. Chapman's credits as a director of photography include such classics as The Last Detail, Taxi Driver, Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Raging Bull.

DVD Playback will review discs of the unsettling and stylish films Naked Lunch, Cure and Willard.

Production Slate will examine the new TV series Miss Match (shot by Ron Garcia, ASC) and Cold Case (shot by Eric Schmidt).

Short Takes will present articles on the striking short films Two Soldiers (directed by ASC member Aaron Schneider and shot by David Boyd) and My Name Is Yu Ming (shot by Fergal O'Hanlon)

Filmmakers' Forum will present James Hawkinson's firsthand account of his cinematography on the outrageous new sitcom Arrested Development, which is shot with Panasonic's VariCam.

Finally, ASC Close-Up will profile a prominent Society member in an enlightening and entertaining Q & A format.

ASC and American Cinematographer News

  • American Cinematographer recently won a Folio: Gold Award for Editorial Excellence, or “Eddie,” during a ceremony that capped the annual Folio: Show in New York City. The show is the nation's largest conference and exposition for the magazine industry.
    AC won the top prize in the Entertainment category after submitting its October 2002 issue for consideration. The ASC’s flagship publication has now earned a remarkable four Eddies over the past seven years. The magazine earned Gold Awards in 1996 and 2000, and a Silver Award in 2002.
