The ASC eNewsletters March 2004 issue of American Cinematographer

Dear Colleague:

Here's an advance look at the March 2004 issue of American Cinematographer magazine, which will focus on documentaries. Also included in this e-newsletter are some items of note from the American Society of Cinematographers.

Cover story: The Passion of the Christ

Director of photography Caleb Deschanel, ASC sits down with fellow cinematographer John Bailey, ASC to discuss his work on director Mel Gibson's controversial feature film about the trial, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Mayor of the Sunset Strip

Cinematographers Kramer Morgenthau and Igor Meglic, director George Hickenlooper and producer Chris Carter offer insights into their documentary about the life and times of colorful Los Angeles radio deejay Rodney Bingenheimer, who has given an array of influential rock bands their first airplay in the United States.

Music From the Inside Out

Shot by Tom Hurwitz, this intriguing documentary goes behind the scenes with members of the Philadelphia Orchestra, who share what it's like to "live a life of music," both onstage and off.

Touching the Void

Cinematographer Mike Eley explores the thrills and dangers of mountain-climbing in this nail-biting "docudrama," which recounts the true story of two men's 1985 ascent of an Andean mountain – and the life-and-death disaster that befell them during their descent.

Imax 3-D Nascar Experience

Gary Jones, who served as B-camera operator on this ambitious and in-your-face auto-racing film, interviews director of photography James Neihouse, who reveals how the show's cameramen shifted the production into high gear.

AC will also review the career of Miroslav Ondricek, ASC, this year's recipient of the ASC International Achievement Award. Ondricek's credits as a director of photography include such memorable films as Loves of a Blonde, The Firemen's Ball, If..., Slaughterhouse-Five, O Lucky Man!, Ragtime, Silkwood, Amadeus, Valmont, Awakenings and A League of Their Own.

This issue's departments will cover an array of other interesting projects and topics:

DVD Playback will review discs of the hard-edged "guy films" Hud, Le Cercle Rouge and To Live and Die in L.A.

Production Slate will examine the critically acclaimed Errol Morris documentary The Fog of War.

Points East will showcase a new Andy Warhol documentary that includes vintage footage shot by Warhol associate Dan Williams.

Short Takes will present articles on the striking short film The Night Before (directed by frequent AC contributor Jay Holben and shot by AC technical editor Christopher Probst) and a Vodafone television commercial (shot by Phil Meheux, BSC).

Finally, ASC Close-Up will profile Bill Dill, ASC in an enlightening and entertaining Q & A format.
