Dear Colleague:
Heres an advance look at the November 2004 issue
of American Cinematographer, which will offer a focus
on specialized cinematography.
Alexander (Warner Bros.)
When filmmaker Oliver Stone began planning this Alexander
the Great biopic with director of photography Rodrigo Prieto,
ASC, AMC, his mantra was, "Be bold." Shortly after
wrapping the project, Prieto sat down with AC senior
editor Rachael K. Bosley to discuss the many ways in which
he took this advice to heart.
Polar Express (Warner Bros.)
Visual-effects cinematography takes center stage in this
holiday fable, which was brought to life with groundbreaking
motion-capture work and CG lighting. Director Robert Zemeckis
brought longtime collaborator Don Burgess, ASC on board to
ensure the results would look richly cinematic, and ACs
Ron Magid will interview them and other members of the projects
core creative team.
Team America (Paramount)
A small very small counterterrorism force called
"Team America" treks around the world to combat
the forces of evil in this comedic action spectacular, which
stars a cast of marionette puppets. Writers/directors Trey
Parker and Matt Stone were thrilled to land Bill Pope, ASC,
who earned his action stripes shooting the Matrix trilogy,
for this very unusual project. Pope will discuss the intricacies
of photographing 3-tall movie stars with AC technical
editor Christopher Probst.
Historical on the Selig-Polyscope Company
Robert S. Birchard will detail the history of the first film
studio established in Los Angeles, with an emphasis on the
cameramen who worked there.

Exploring Color Space (Part 1 of 6)
The ASC Technology Committees ongoing and vital work
will be the focus of a six-part series written by Debra Kaufman.
Our focus on specialized cinematography will carry
over to our Production Slate department, which will
include coverage of the Imax feature Roar: Lions of
the Kalahari and the macro-photography project Bugs!
DVD Playback will review three recent releases of
note: Duel (1971), Videodrome (1983) and GoodFellas
(1990).
