The ASC Store eNewsletters

A “how-to” newsletter about film and digital techniques and technologies by
Jon Fauer, ASC.

Jon Fauer, ASC, noted cinematographer, director and author, recently started a newsletter called Film and Digital Times. The newsletter will be published six (6) times per year and is available by subscription only. Each issue will be at least 16 pages and will focus on equipment, technique and technology. There will be no advertisements.

American Cinematographer subscribers are eligible for a special introductory subscription rate of $39 per year ($49 in Canada, $59 in all other countries), which represents a savings of more than 20 percent.

To order, go to the ASC website (www.theasc.com) or call the ASC Bookstore at (800) 448-0145 or (323) 969-4333. For more information, or to download the complimentary premiere issue, visit: http://www.fdtimes.com/.

Fauer got the idea for a newsletter after he finished the 2nd edition of his ARRICAM BOOK and began to receive e-mails inquiring about an Arriflex 235 book. Because it takes over a year to publish a book, Fauer wondered whether there was a faster way to share practical, technical advice with other cinematographers. The answer was Film and Digital Times, a continuing series of technical bulletins on the nuts and bolts and ins and outs of the tools of the cinematography trade. Of course, it will not focus solely on ARRI equipment — it will discuss everything Fauer and his colleagues encounter as they shoot features, commercials and television projects.

The premiere issue of Film and Digital Times will be distributed free of charge at NAB in Las Vegas and at CineGear in Los Angeles. The issue examines new, lightweight film and digital cameras, including the Arriflex 235, the Sony HDR-FX1, the Panasonic DVX-100a and the Canon XL-2. (Fauer recently shot a feature title sequence in Miami using all of them.) The issue also discusses underwater housings, spray covers, camera boats, gyros, lenses and filters.

Each issue will feature a column called “Lighting with Paint” (apologies to Painting with Light author John Alton, ASC) that will discuss art, painting, lighting, color and composition. If Rembrandt were a cinematographer, how would he have lit the scene in question?
